Customer Synonym Lists (CSL)

With the addition of collection-level processing, Salience introduced detection of common items across documents called facets. In many cases, it is the recurrence of the same term as the subject of a sentence that generates a facet. Salience uses the Concept Matrix to determine conceptually similar facets and aggregate them together.

Customer Synonym List (CSL) files exist to give the user an extra level of explicit control over relating terms for facets and their corresponding attributes. They allow a user to declare synonymous words for use with collection facets and attributes, thus controlling the roll-up of these items.

For example, in the retail domain the terms associate and clerk are synonyms. By defining these words in a CSL file, Salience will group these facets and attributes together when they occur.

The format of a CSL file is a two-column, tab-delimited list where words in the second column will be rolled up with words in the first column.

This entry would result in occurrences of the facet "clerk" to be rolled up with "associate". Hence, the final label for the facet would be "associate".

CSL files must be placed in the [path to user directory]/salience/keyentities folder with a .csl extension, and are automatically read in by Salience during session initialization.
